Vacation Part 1

As I mentioned in a previous post, Eric and I decided to take a "real" vacation this year that didn't involve the tortuous 1,000 mile drive across Nebraska to see family (the seeing family part isn't tortuous, just the driving part).  There are so many wonderful  places right in our state that we hadn't seen yet so we decided to do a mini tour of CO to places we had yet to visit.  We started our trek by driving through Estes Park where we stopped at the local brewery to fill up a growler then had some BBQ.  Estes is a pretty special place for me as it is where I used to vacation with my family when I was younger.  Since living here as an adult we have spent many lovely weekends in Estes and even got engaged at a B&B there.
We entered Rocky Mountain National Park and started the laborious trek through the park and up the pass, those high mountain passes without guardrails are not for the faint of heart!  We had never been west of the visitor's center at the highest point of the road so were excited to soon experience a new territory.

We drove on through the park and ended up in Grand Lake and Granby, CO, where we planned to camp our first night.  We knew there was a lake there but I was unprepared for the size of it, it just went on and on.  Living in a land-locked state we just aren't used to seeing large bodies of water.

We found our campsite at the western edge of the lake and sent up camp
We were a little disappointed that the lake was so low on this end due to drought conditions this summer, but Cassidy made the best of it anyways  .

That night we settled down to some turkey burgers and fire roasted baked potatoes, I beat Eric in 2 games of Yahtzee, and we saw a magnificent sunset.

The next day we moved on but agreed that this would be an area to visit again for a long weekend due to it's relative proximity and accessibility of many great trails on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park.  A great start to a great week.
